The Wallingford and Green Lake gym guide: Stone Way load, a 2.8 mile loop, and eight rooms around it

The loop came first

Green Lake is a closed circuit. The inner paved path runs 2.8 miles. The outer soft surface trail runs 3.2 miles. No stoplights, no cross traffic, and a gradient that barely registers. That geometry has set the training pattern here for a century, and every room within a mile of the water has had to decide whether it competes with the loop or feeds it.

Most feed it. Wallingford holds the load, on Stone Way N above the ship canal, in machine floors and reformer studios. The lake holds the mileage. The blocks between the two, roughly N 45th up to NE 71st, hold everything else. Four of the addresses below share ZIP 98115.

Stone Way holds the load

Emerald City Athletics, 3924 Stone Way N. A general fitness floor: cardio rows, weight training machines, circuit machines, free weights. Group programming runs on the house Champions format, a 60 minute session built to work the cardiovascular and muscular systems in one block, offered at Fitness and Performance levels. HYROX SimCompetitions run separately. Recovery sits on the same floor plan: InBody composition scans and a hydromassage room. Doors open at 5am Monday through Friday and close at 10pm, with weekend hours from 7am to 7pm. Memberships start at $22 a month.

Orangetheory Fitness Wallingford, 1325 N 45th St. On the corner of 45th and Stone Way, across from Archie McPhee. Three stations, one clock: treadmills, rowers, and a strength floor stocked with dumbbells, benches, TRX straps, medicine balls, and BOSU trainers. Coach led intervals, heart rate driven, run on a fixed class length. Indoor treadmill volume, four blocks up the grade from the water.

Studio Evolve, 3333 Wallingford Ave N, Suite B. Open since 2006, two blocks north of the Burke Gilman Trail and Gas Works Park. Pilates reformers and Gyrotonic towers, run as private sessions, duets, and semi private reformer classes. Street parking out front. This is accessory work for the loop: hips, thoracic rotation, and the single leg patterns that 2.8 miles of repeated impact quietly asks for.

Around the water

Green Lake Community Center and Evans Pool, 7201 E Green Lake Dr N. Built in 1996, on the eastern shore, directly on the path. Two full size gyms and a drop in fitness room for adults, stocked with dumbbells, cable weights, treadmills, and stationary bikes. Center hours run 10am to 9pm on weekdays and 8:30am to 5pm on Saturday.

Evans Pool shares the building. Twenty five yards, six lanes, a one meter board, a sauna, family changing rooms, and an ADA lift. Lap swim opens all six lanes from 8:30 to 10am and again from 6:30 to 8pm, dropping to three lanes midday. Loop, swim, sauna, all at one address.

Green Lake Small Craft Center, 5900 W Green Lake Way N. The southwest corner of the lake, and the only entry on this list where the training surface is the water. Green Lake Crew rows out of here, sweep and sculling, youth and adult. Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club shares the boathouse. Adult paddling sessions run Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30. Aerobic volume without ground impact, which is the whole argument for it.

The blocks in between

Green Lake Strength and Conditioning, 466 NE 70th St. The barbell room of the group, four blocks off the north shore. It opened in 2008 as Northwest CrossFit and separated from the CrossFit brand in 2020 under the current name. Programming splits three ways: group strength and conditioning classes capped at 12, specialty barbell skill classes capped at 9, and semi private personal training capped at 6. Hours run 6am to 1pm and 3:30 to 7:30pm on weekdays, 8am to noon on both weekend days. The split schedule brackets a commute.

Greenlake Fitness, 7203 Woodlawn Ave NE. A full service independent club a block off the northeast shore. Free weights, cardio and weight machines, a downstairs studio for hour long group classes, personal training, sauna, individual shower stalls, and daily lockers. Doors open at 5am on weekdays and close at 10pm. Memberships start at $64 a month with no contract. During scheduled classes the downstairs studio closes to general floor use, so the timetable governs the room.

Pure Barre Seattle Green Lake, 406 NE 71st St. In Green Lake Village, next to the PCC. Low impact isometric strength work at the barre, Pilates adjacent in load and tempo, run on a fixed class clock. Monday hours run 8am to 1:30pm and 3:45 to 8:15pm, with Sunday classes from 8am to 4pm.

Street by street

Stone Way N is the machine corridor: Emerald City at 3924, Orangetheory at the 45th Street corner. Wallingford Ave N is the mat and the reformer. E Green Lake Dr N is the pool and the drop in floor. W Green Lake Way N is the boathouse. NE 70th and NE 71st are the barbell and the barre. Woodlawn Ave NE is the club with the sauna.

Four of the eight sit inside a 10 minute walk of the water. The other four sit within a mile south, up the Stone Way grade. The practical read is two memberships: one room with racks and a plate rail, one lap around the lake. Nothing here is more than fifteen blocks from anything else here.

Wallingford and Green Lake never built a fitness district on purpose. A lake got a path around it, the path filled with runners at 6am and again at 6pm, and the rooms went up on the streets that fed the traffic. The loop is still the anchor. Everything else parked next to it.
